The Politics of Jesus @ Busboys and Poets
February 28, 2007 (Wednesday)
6:30 - 8:00 PM (Langston Room) Author Event. Jesus was a Revolutionary? Without a doubt, says Dr. Obery Hendricks. In this Author and Book Signing Event, Hendricks makes the case that Jesus was a dedicated political activist whose challenge of the status quo provides a contemporary model for those who confront violence, poverty, racism, and oppression. Publisher's Weekly says: "Thundering like a biblical prophet against social and economic injustice, racism and political deceit ("Jesus did not establish a bureaucratic institution, weekly social gatherings, or houses of religious entertainment"), Hendricks, professor of biblical interpretation at New York Theological Seminary, proclaims Jesus as a political revolutionary who overturned the unjust social policies of his day." Sponsored by Sojourners/Call to Renewal (http://www.sojo.net/) and Clergy Strategic Alliances. LLC (http://www.clergyaction.org/). For more information, contact Robin Fillmore at rfillmore@sojo.net or Rhoda McKinney-Jones at rmjwriter@comcast.net. This event is free and open to the public.

Your kingdom come... (for Mon, 2/19)
For those of you who weren’t with us this past Monday, we decided that we will meet this coming Monday (February 19), despite the fact that it’s a federal holiday. Also, we will meet in the common room of the complex rather than in Sarah’s apartment. If I remember correctly, it’s on the ground level. Just ask the concierge where to go when you sign in.
Since we’ve been kind of heavy on the teaching side the last two weeks, this week we’ll try to balance that out with more discussion. If you can, read the following passages before Monday. As you read them, ask yourself, “When Jesus instructed us to pray, ‘Your kingdom come, your will be done…,’ what does that mean? Practically, what does that look like for us as believers?” This is what our discussion will center around. Looking forward to it!
Isaiah 61 The year of the Lord’s favor
Luke 4:16-20 Jesus reads Isaiah in the synagogue
Luke 9:1-6 Jesus places his ministry on the 12
Luke 10:1-9 Jesus commissions the 72
Matt 28:16-20 The great commission
Matt 6:9-13 The Lord’s prayer

Kingdom Homework :-)
Look for references to the kingdom in the scripture. Can you identify different indications of its proximity (i.e. present, near, delayed, future)? What other characteristics of the kingdom can you identify?
Please comment on this post with anything that jumps out at you or any interesting insights you would like to share wrt the kingdom.
I'll get us started...
Luke 17:21 - nor will people say, 'Here it is,' or 'There it is,' because the kingdom of God is within [or among] you."
Wow! I love this one. This seems to confirm that the kingdom is more than a future reality, but a present reality as well - right where we are!
Luke 18:17 - I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the
Interesting... child-like faith.

The Kingdom of God Part 1 Notes

Radically Balanced Google Group created
It may seem complicated, but I hope it will ultimately streamline our online communication. Another advantage of setting things up this way is that I can upload notes and things to the Google Group that I wouldn't be able to on the blog.
We'll indefinitely have to play with it a little and see how it all works for us, so be patient. Thanks.
